Oguri Shun gets overwhelmed by Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas

13Jun08

(Source: Mainichi) *a little aside* Looking at Oguri Shun’s photos nowadays, I get the feeling that he’s deliberately uglifying himself so as to discourage the fangirl-craziness that is positively raging in Japan now… how else to explain his recent predilection for appearing like an Ojisan??? Well but he still has character, imho. 🙂 . More Ojisan pictures:

Quite embarrassing when you’re a star displaced from your kingdom, and having to pose for the photographer whilst other people are giving you sideglances etc?? But not for professionals! Shun looks like he doesn’t give a damn, and he probably really doesn’t. Okay now back to the point.

The article is like the sequel to a previous article, probably printed during my vacation and I’m too slothful to go pick clicks + links back so I’ll just give you this one. Cirque Du Soleil will arrive in Japan’s Disney Resort on the October 1st this year, and I guess in an effort to drum up publicity for the show they have flown Oguri Shun to Las Vegas to experience it live.

They start off by describing the place; pyramids, a statue of liberty, themed hotels, huge attractions blahblah. Then comes Shun-kun’s comment – “I don’t really like it desu-nee. But since I came here for the gamble and the show, I think it’s a nice place. Especially since I came here to watch the show, of course it’s a good place.” What a strange flip-floppy statement! But the journalist continues to write that Shun-kun is a straight talking and frank character. But we all know that.

The next two paragraphs sorta talk about Cirque Du Soleil … (don’t feel like translating) so let’s go straight to Shun’s review of it! “It’s really the absolute definition of entertainment! I was dumbfounded by the dynamics and the performance, they have shown me quite vividly what it means to be in the show business. With the scale of the theatre and the number of audience, it probably boosted the morale of the performers and it felt like everything was progressing towards the right direction. I was wondering when I would, as an actor, be able to stand on such a stage as this… yes even though I thought about it, it’s probably only possible in this country. It would be difficult in Japan…”

As a fellow performer living in the same world of show business, Oguri unintentionally reflected upon his own situation, and at the end of night became a little bit blue. [literally, he became a blue Oguri]

Ended on quite a sombre note. Oh well, humans can rarely be satisfied. =)

As for the flip-floppy comment (which I also thought was strange), perhaps he meant that Las Vegas didn’t fit his tastes (it rarely fits anyone’s – it’s so loud and bright and a little too much), but that it was a fun place to be, at least for a short while. I wouldn’t mind vacationing in Sin City, but living there… ugh.

Ah! You’re right, cliodhna, somehow they have that “empty eyes” look and both have sharp chin.

It looks like he went to go see “O”, which is a beautiful Cirque du Soleil in the Bellagio hotel. lol I recognize the theater because last time I watched it this year, I was sitting next to where he was.

  6. I don’t know why , but he didn’t shave at all… Is it the craze now ? I think it’s better to be cleanly-shaved…

Hehehe, I don’t think he can “uglify” himself even if he tried .. he has too much character. I just find it cool that he can carry himself so differently from one role to another. From the classy Hanazawa Rui in HYD, to the aloof Sano Izumi in Hana Kimi, then the tough guy in Crows 0. Sometimes I can’t even believe that those three characters were portrayed by just one person. He is awesome.
